Citric Acid-Free DIY Shower Steamer
I love bath salts, but showers aren't always practical, especially in the morning before work. Then there's the shower, which usually isn't that leisurely. But aromatherapy shower pans are an easy way to make showers more relaxing.

And they're so easy to make in the kitchen, requiring only three ingredients! You can customize the scent, and baking the discs dries them out for handling.

Can you make citric acid-free shower steamers?
Yes! These do not include citric acid. The ingredient list only has three ingredients and the body of the steamer is made with baking soda. Please note that citric acid is what gives the bath bombs and many shower steamers their "bubbling" effect, so not using citric acid means no fun bubbling.

That's fine, but if you use them more often to get a lovely scent, then forgo the citric acid and you'll be fine. This means you probably already have the ingredients in your kitchen to make these foods!

Refills
1 cup baking soda, an excellent binder, and water
15-20 drops of essential oil. I used eucalyptus essential oil to add a lovely, relaxing scent.
Mixing bowl, spoon, oven and cupcake molds (I love this silicone mold!) We got two from my parents as Christmas gifts. (Nothing sticks and it's very easy to clean).

A citric acid free DIY shower steamer recipe!
(Don't use any ingredients you are allergic to and always sample test new ingredients to make sure you don't react to them. Do not use any homemade products without first consulting an appropriate medical professional.)

Step 1: Mixing Baking Soda and Essential Oils
First, I mix the baking soda and eucalyptus essential oil, adding a few drops at a time, stirring as I go. Don't overdo it with the essential oils; remember that you can always add more when you make another batch in the future. I used 15-20 drops because I wanted a very strong scent.

Step 2: Add water slowly
After mixing thoroughly, I started adding about a tablespoon or two of water at a time. The goal here is to get the consistency of wet sand. I eventually gave up on the spoon kneeling down and mixing with my fingers ...... This was the easiest way to fix the last stubborn crumb.

Step 3: Press the mixture into the mold and bake briefly
I used a spoon to press the mixture into the bottom of the silicone mold. I did not fill the entire mold, but only the bottom quarter to half of each mold. I baked at a low temperature of 170 degrees for about 5 minutes.

This will allow the shower tray to dry out and cure. They may rise a little while baking, just like cupcake batter. Once they cooled down, I removed them from the molds and stored them in an airtight container.
